Los 101 discos esenciales del rock clásico (una lista polémica)

Hay quien odia las listas y quien las adora. La siguiente pertenece al libro 101 essential rock records. The golden age of vinyl from the Beatles to the Sex Pistols, que llega a las librerías esta navidad, de mano de su autor Jeff Gold.

Gold  trabajo en la discográfica Warner y A & M. Ahora, monta exposiciones y gestiona recordmecca.com/, una tienda online para coleccionistas de gama alta. Y su libro que ya está siendo polémico, incluso vituperado.  Resulta que 101 essential rock records cubre únicamente elepés del periodo 1963-1977. Decisión discutible que deja fuera de esta lista a grandes artistas que son fundamentales para la historia del rock, como son Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry o Fats Domino,  desaparecen del canon de Jeff Gold. Que comienza en marzo de 1963, con el debut de los Beatles.

La fecha de cierre también parece arbitraria. Asegura Gold que en 1977 comienza el declive del soporte elepé, al ascender la casete y popularizarse el walkman. Es un argumento endeble; se seguía pensando en términos de LPs. Aparte, el walkman debutó comercialmente en Japón allá por 1979; Sony tardaría varios años en introducirlo mundialmente. La decisión de cortar en noviembre de 1977 –fecha de salida del Never mind the bollocks- es difícil de compartir pero cualquiera puede entender su ansía por evitar chapotear en la fragmentación estilística que siguió a la insurgencia punk.

Una advertencia. El listado es CRONOLÓGICO, no por orden de calidad, originalidad, influencia o ventas.  El disco nº 7 no es necesariamente es mejor que el 47º. Recuerden que se cierra antes de 1978. Por planteamiento del autor, quedan fuera U2, Joy Division, REM, Prince, Nirvana y  tantos otros.
